Traffic Buttons A traffic button is a physical feature centered in an intersection with the intent of reducing travel speeds on residential streets. Motorists are required to slow down to safely manoeuvre through the intersection. City council has only recently approved their use. Can you imagine this at Premier and Carlton - or somewhere else? Give us your feedback. Please.
What are Speed Humps Speed humps or roadway undulations are raised sections of pavement constructed across a roadway. They are approximately 10 centimeters (4 inches) high and 5 metres (17 feet) long. Unlike speed bumps commonly found in parking lots, speed humps are tapered on both ends and are elongated to allow for low speed travel. Speed humps have the advantage of being self-enforcing at all hours of the day and night. In addition, properly designed and installed speed humps have been effective in controlling vehicle speeds without increasing accidents if the posted speed is adhered to by motorists. Partial Closure A partial or half closure of a roadway may be used to restrict access or egress. There is a concern that enforcement may be required to ensure compliance as there is an opportunity for vehicles to circumvent the partial closure by driving on the wrong side of the road. From experience this measure is primarily abused by local residents who fail to adjust to revised traffic patterns in their neighborhood. It should be noted that this type of installation may impact on-street parking. Channelization Channelization refers to the introduction of traffic restraint measures which are intended to direct or channel traffic in a particular direction. Theses measures, commonly referred to as islands, are designed to physically prevent specific movements. As a result thay may have a significant impact on shortcutting traffic. There will of course be a corresponding disruption to resident traffic. In some cases, motorists will persist in circumventing the channelization and some police enforcement will be required. Physical Measures -Road Narrowing / Bulbing Road narrowing or bulbing refers to the introduction of a physical barrier projecting
out from the curb line. These features can be introduced both at intersections and
midblock locations. They are intended to regulate traffic flow into specific lanes,
preventing midblock passingor force turning movements at intersections. They may also be
used to formalize parking lanes and reduce pedestrian crossing distances. Careful
consideration must be given to impacts on turning movements, transit operation and
cyclists.
