What does the City have in store for Mount Royal? Here is a summary of
City Changes that may -and probably will - have an effect on Mount Royal.
- 11th and 12th Ave. are going to become two way streets. This is
good for Mount Royal since traffic that would possibly cut through in the PM
rush will have lots of options to go East or West to get around Mount Royal
-rather than having to cut through!
- The controversial 50th Avenue bridge - although the Politicians in the
City think that Calgarians can live without this East-West linkage -it is
interesting that every non-political traffic recommendation that comes out
of the City points out that it is actually required. Premier Way and Council
Way as well as 30th Ave and Sifton Ave in Elbow Park are all living with this decision. The
traffic volumes will obviously continue to increase. The City - because they
decided not to build 50th - is also willing to help Mount Royal and Elbow
Park bottleneck these roads so that we do not pay the price for the City's
policy concerning the abandonment of the 50th Ave. corridor. What is
interesting is that eventually 50th will likely have to be built due
to the lack of any viable alternatives being proposed -it will require a horrible line of cars on
Elbow Drive and a great deal of screaming Calgary residents to override the
NO 50th lobby. Here is a map excerpt from the Inner City Traffic Study -
note the missing link.

- The City is talking of making it possible to go East on Memorial drive when
coming off 14th Street. This will benefit Mount Royal -and all the downtown
-since you will not need to cut through the downtown and Mount Royal to get
to Ikea or the Airport. The City has told us that 40% of the cars that are
in downtown Calgary -really do not want to be there. They are simple having
to be there due to lack of alternatives that by-pass the downtown.
